🌱 Amazon Frogbit – Easy Floating Plant for Natural Aquariums

The Amazon Frogbit (Limnobium laevigatum) is one of the easiest floating plants to grow and manage, making it a favourite for both beginners and seasoned aquascapers. Unlike fully submerged plants, Frogbit draws carbon dioxide directly from the air, allowing it to grow quickly and absorb more nitrates than many other species of plants that solely rely on the amount of CO2 dissolved in the water. This helps improve water quality naturally while creating a lush, green surface cover.

This plant offers both beauty and function — its long, trailing roots create safe hiding spots and breeding areas for shrimp, fry, and small fish, helping them feel secure and thrive. With fast growth and easy removal, you get all the benefits of a high-growth plant without the hassle of it taking over your aquarium.

Care & Setup

  • Placement: Floating plant (requires no planting or substrate).

  • Lighting: Moderate to high light for best growth.

  • Water Flow: Prefers gentle flow; strong currents may damage roots.

  • Nutrients: Thrives on excess nitrates in the tank; benefits from occasional fertilisation.

  • Temperature: 18–28°C (64–82°F).

Amazon Frogbit is hardy, adaptable, and a fantastic choice for natural-style aquariums. Its floating leaves add a unique surface aesthetic while shading parts of the tank, reducing algae growth and providing calmer areas for fish beneath.

✔️ Fast-growing and nutrient-absorbing, helps control nitrates
✔️ Easy to manage and remove as needed
✔️ Provides shade, shelter, and breeding grounds for shrimp and fish
✔️ Surface growth adds a natural, jungle-like feel to tanks
✔️ Great for both beginners and experienced aquarists

⚠️ Note: Regular thinning is recommended, as dense surface cover can block too much light from reaching submerged plants. Be sure to dispose of this plant appropriately and never let it spread to our waterways. It is best to compost it or allow it to dry then throw it out.
